PII (Personally Identifiable Information)

Any information that can be used to identify a specific individual, such as name, email, SSN, or IP address.

Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is any data that could potentially identify a specific individual. PII can be direct identifiers (data that directly identifies someone, such as name, SSN, or passport number) or indirect/quasi-identifiers (data that could identify someone when combined with other data, such as date of birth, zip code, or gender). Common examples include: names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, financial account numbers, biometric data, medical records, IP addresses, and device identifiers. Different regulations define personal data differently — GDPR uses 'personal data' (broader than PII), CCPA uses 'personal information' (also broader, including household data).
